Martin Cotton

Martin Cotton was born in Oxford, where he studied the piano from an early age. Later, he took up the organ and the double bass, and played in various churches, and in local youth and amateur orchestras. From 1970, he studied music at King's College, Cambridge, where his teachers included Philip Radcliffe, Alan Ridout and Robin Holloway, and where he graduated with a B.A.(Hons.), and a Mus.B in performance (piano) and composition.
After leaving Cambridge, he became a private tutor in the United Arab Emirates. In 1978, he joined the Television Music Library at the BBC, and in 1984, he moved to BBC Radio 3 as a Producer, where he worked in almost all areas of the output, including the Youth Orchestras of the World series. He was particularly involved in contemporary music, and commissioned and produced “Swansong 1989”, a radiogenic work by David Sawer, which won the Sony Technical Prize (1990), and was commended at the Prix Italia. This coincided with his appointment as Chief Producer of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He worked extensively with Sir Andrew Davis and with many others, including Pierre Boulez, Günter Wand, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Oliver Knussen, Alexander Lazarev, David Atherton and Mark Elder.
Leaving the BBC in 1994, he entered the freelance music marketplace, continuing to produce radio programmes; appearing as a reviewer on Radio 3's CD Review and in the BBC Music Magazine; and also producing and writing notes for CDs.
Whilst at the BBC he became involved with the Society for the Promotion of New Music, where he was on the Board of Management for several years, and the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition, of which he was Chairman until 2010. He is a member of the Artistic Committee of the Park Lane Group, with a particular interest in the annual concert series for young artists. In 2011 he joined the committee of the British Music Society, with special responsibility for its recording projects.
His work as an examiner for ABRSM now occupies an increasing amount of his time, at grade and diploma level, both in the UK and abroad. He is the producer of the recordings of the 2015 and 2017 ABRSM piano syllabuses.
